START SAILING WITH CNCEThe annual Beginners’ Course (BC) of the CNCE is one of the major events of the sailing season of our club. Based on the new format proved very successful during the past few years, emphasis will again be given on the practical aspects of sailing and on conviviality. The BC will again bring together about 70 old and new members of the club and will offer to newcomers the possibility to meet and learn from more experienced members that wish to share their skills and passion about sailing.

The BC will start with two theoretical sessions that will be held at the CCAB, rue Froissart 36, Brussels, early in June. We have reserved two dates (on May 31st and June 7th 2016, from 19h00 to 22h00). After the practical part, a third theoretical session will be organised. During this session a debriefing of the hands-on part will take place and additional topics may be developed.
The theoretical classes will include:
- Seamanship –parts of a boat, key nautical jargon and terms, knots
- Basic boat handling – points of sailing, steering a course, luffing-up and bearing away, tacking and gybing
- Navigation – principles, coastal and dead-reckoning navigation
- Collision Regulations –working knowledge of the regulations in relation to steering rules, lights, shapes and sound signals
- Safety & Weather –safety aspects and main risks, fundamentals of the development of pressure systems and how they influence the weather
- Fluid dynamics and principles of sail trimming (basic theory)
- Briefing & Info about the practical part that will take place in Bruinisse, the Netherlands
The practical (hands-on) part of the BC will take place in Bruinisse (NL) during the weekend of 11-12 June 2016, where the "beginners" will experience the pleasures of day sailing on Valk boats, as well as on cabin yachts. It will be the opportunity to learn the ropes and take the helm.
This comprehensive beginners’ training course is highly recommended for those wishing to participate in the other activities featured in the year 2016 sailing programme.
