Beginners' Course 2019

Would you like to learn how to sail?

Or get back into it?

Just do it! We will give you a hand...

Our Beginners’ Course BC2019 is based on 3 modules:

  • basic theory course (4 evening sessions)
  • sailing on a cruiser yacht (1 day)
  • sailing on a dinghy (1 day)
The aim of the Beginners' Course is to give you a taste of sailing: you will be experiencing two days of sailing on two different types of boats, providing very different sensations, completed with a comprehensive introduction to the main chapters of the sailing bible.
At the end, a party will be organised in Brussels to celebrate your introduction into the sailing world!

What to expect?

Cruiser sailing

You will sail on BlueOne, the yacht owned by the Club, a Beneteau First 36.7 (11 meters), fully equipped for safe and comfortable cruising and racing with 3 cabins, 1 bathroom/toilet, 1 galley (kitchen), full electronics and safety equipment (IAS, GPS, chart plotters, autopilot…).
During each session onboard BlueOne you will be part of a crew of six sailors: 4 beginners and 2 skippers.

Dinghy sailing

You will sail on valk boats that are perfectly fitted for learning how to sail as they are stable and, just as cruisers, equipped with a keel, a main sail and a headsail.
You will be sailing in a group of 2 boats with 4 sailors on each boat: 3 beginners and 1 coach per boat.

Theory course sessions

5 modules will be delivered, with the aim of complementing the practical part with an introduction to the sailing fundamentals.
  • Basic Boat Handling: the goal is to give you the basic notions of sailing: how to master the power of the wind, how to jybe and tack, understand how the keel works...
  • Seamanship: the goal is to give you the basic nautical skills, introduce the key nautical terminology, practice knots, etc.
  • Introduction to nautical charts will present you the challenge of determining the boat position and navigate you through the marine landscape.
  • Rules of the Road will give you a basic understanding of the rules for boats on the water, navigation marks (types of buoys, marks, etc.)
  • Safety & weather will make you aware of possible risks and how to avoid them, and will introduce you to the basics of weather forecasts.

Beginners’ party

A Nav'Apero will be dedicated to the CNCE Beginners’ class 2019 and a drink will be offered to all participants.

Where will it take place?

You will be sailing in Zeeland (Netherlands) "where the earth meets the sea". It is a perfect place to learn sailing as it is notably protected from the sea by seawalls. Zeeland is really charming with beautiful maritime landscapes and opportunities to observe many different species of wildlife such as dolphins, seals, ducks or sea gulls.
Car pooling to Zeeland, (+/- 1 hour 30 min from Brussels) will be organised by skippers and coaches ahead of each event.
The theory sessions and the Beginners’ party will take place in Brussels.
