Courses 2018

January - April: CNCE Theory Sessions

April - June: Harbour Manoeuvre Trainings

28-29 April: RYA Offshore Safety / Sea Survival

21-22 April: RYA Marine Radio Course / First Aid at Sea

CNCE Theory Sessions

Things to do during the off-season

During the winter months, experienced CNCE members share their knowledge on various aspects of sailing. These theory sessions usually take place at a conveniently located building in Brussels near Metro Maelbeek and are free for participants of the Beginners' Course of the previous sailing season.
16 JANUARY - Introduction to celestial navigation
Presentation by Emilio Castrillejo

Navigating with the stars is one of the most romantic sides of sailing. Aside idealistic reasons, the ability to know your position when all electronics fail can make the difference between life and death in ocean navigation.

Date: Tuesday 16 January 2018, 18:30 to 20:30.
Location: MARE J99, room 00/53. Metro Maalbeek.
PAF: €10

Prerequisites: participants must be familiar with the concepts of Latitude, Longitude and Degrees. It is not required to be able to know chart navigation, but those able to navigate with charts will get most of this presentation.

What is NOT in the presentation: The presentation is just an introduction. It is not possible to fully learn astronomical navigation in only 2 hours. Since the presentation will be indoor, we will not practice with the sextant.

What to expect: Following the presentation, participants will understand the principles of positioning with starts and planets; and how to find their position in the north hemisphere with the help of a sextant and related tools, in three cases: latitude by North Star, latitude by Sun at noon, and longitude by Sun at noon.
23 January - Nautical charts theory and practice
Presentation by Dimitri Chronopoulos

Nautical charts are thoroughly presented, starting with projections, features, symbols and continuing with practical exercises of how to calculate distances and determine the course between two points. The presentation falls short of compass reading and errors, as well as plotting, estimations and bearings, which constitutes the next chapter of a comprehensive navigation course.

Date: Tuesday 23 January 2018, 19:00 to 22:00.
Location: MARE J99, room 00/53.
Metro Maalbeek.
PAF: €10

Prerequisites – participants must have basic knowledge of coordinates (Latitude/Longitude)/how to find the boat position. The lecture is ideal for those who attended the Beginners’ Course in 2017 and followed the “Introduction to nautical Charts” navigation training module.
30 January - Conference “Racing at Cowes Week”
Presentation by Massimo Farrugia & Timo Hallantie

CNCE's racing team will talk about their experience of racing in the Solent last summer, including boat and crew preparation, racing tactics, weather and navigation challenges, and lessons learnt.

Date: Tuesday 30 January 2018, 19:00 to 21:00.
Location: MARE J99, room 00/53. Metro Maalbeek.
PAF: €10
27 FEBRUARY - ELECTRONIC NAVIGATION
Presentation by Nicolas Jonckers on the use of electronic tools for navigation.

Date: Tuesday, 27 February 2018, 19:00 to 21:00.
Location: MARE J99, room 00/53. Metro Maalbeek.
PAF: €10
8 MARCH - TIDES

In this presentation, you will learn about tidal patterns and tidal predictions which are of vital importance for passage planning.

Participants will be awarded a certificate by the VVW attesting the trainings in which they participated.

How to get there
To get to the marina: E40 - direction Veurne, exit 3 "Nieuwpoort".
First traffic lights turn right direction "Nieuwpoort Stad".
Keep going until the end (= 2nd traffic light) and then turn right (direction "Lombardsijde-Oostende" - "Kustbaan").
Over the bridge, passing the monument "Albert" (one of the Belgian kings), turn left at the first coming traffic lights.  Cross the street and turn left.  This is the "Watersportlaan".
Follow the road until you see a big white pyramid at your left side and a bit further you will see a "barrier".  If the barrier is open, you can continue and park your car there, otherwise you will have to find a space somewhere there.

First Aid at Sea

Marine Radio Course
(RYA certificate), 21 April

This practical and theoretical training enables you to handle a marine radio (short range certificate). Many charter companies ask for the certificate (at least in the Mediterranean).

The Short Range Certificate is the qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures, including MAYDAY.
There are 8 places available shared between BISC and CNCE.
Book or enquire on BISC website

First Aid at Sea, 22 April

This one-day course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages.
In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.

There are 8 places available shared between BISC and CNCE. To secure your place for the course.
